Willem de Rooij, “Pierre Verger in Suriname”
Photographer, ethnologist, and babalawo Pierre Fátúmbí Verger (1902–1996) studied the traffic and relationships between the cultures of the African Diaspora and those of West Africa. In 1948 Verger made 257 images during an eight-day trip through Suriname. Willem de Rooij's installation at Portikus Frankfurt connects the spectator and these images by means of a special viewing device. The accompagning book unifies the whole series of Verger's images from Suriname, while essays from six different perspectives contextualise them.
